MPB Student Award Winners
MPB and Photo|Frome are pleased to announce our Student Awards for 2025. This welcomed projects of all genre and styles of photography, and any photographic processes, that reflect this year’s theme, inEquality.
The awards were open to any student currently enrolled in a UK-based education programme.
Judges were 1000 Words Editor In Chief, Tim Clark; MPB Content Marketing Manager, Amy Moore; curator and writer, Pelumi Odubanjo; and Photo|Frome Student Awards 2023 winner, Amin Yousefi.
MPB is offering a range of valuable prizes:
- First prize is a £500 MPB voucher
- Second prize is a £250 MPB voucher
- A Pre-Degree prize of a £250 MPB voucher
- Two runner-up MPB vouchers of £125 each
The Photo|Frome CIC Board is also offering a Frome Community Award £250 cash prize.
Winners, runners-up, and honourable mentions will be exhibited in the Café at Rook Lane Chapel 6 – 27 April.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Sacrifice Zones: 41.4993°N | 81.6944°W explores Cleveland, Ohio’s legacy of violence through transient street memorials in predominantly Black neighborhoods. These fragile shrines commemorate lives lost to systemic inequities, racial injustice, and economic marginalization. Cleveland’s homicide rate in 2022 was over four times the national average, with 89% of victims being Black. Concentrated on the East Side, where disinvestment deepens vulnerabilities, these memorials reflect collective grief and resilience. Their impermanence symbolizes the ongoing struggle against erasure in marginalized communities.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Belladonna is a ongoing long term project in which I am documenting my older sister Kayleigh and her experiences with single motherhood, being on benefits and raising a child in tandem with the oppression of an abusive ex partner. I made Belladonna as Kayleigh needed to see herself thriving and the amazing job she is doing. It has not been published, though I have hand made 3 copies of a book. I want to show my sister how brave and celebrated she is.
ARTIST STATEMENT
The project is about a contradiction that exists inside Boxing gyms, Boxing itself is a sport centered around an act of organized violence and has a history of upholding traditional and toxic masculine ideals. The boxing gym itself though acts in stark contrast to this, it can be a place in which young men can develop and become disclipined while fostering a needed sense of community. Punch Drunk is my exploration of how these two things can coexist at once.
ARTIST STATEMENT
The Dumbiedykes housing estate in Edinburgh, built between 1959 and 1964, is uniquely situated beside the Old Town, Arthur’s Seat, and the Scottish Parliament. Despite its prime location, the area has faced challenges over the years, including economic deprivation and poor housing quality. My family roots in Dumbiedykes and childhood memories inspired me to return and document the area and its residents.
