Wessex Grand Prix

‘This series follows the Somerset Carnival circuit, aka ‘The Wessex Grand Prix,’ one of the oldest traditional lit processions and considered the largest in the world. It is an impressive spectacle of ritual and performance, yet largely unknown outside of the region.The participants of the carnivals have been involved for many years, sometimes over many generations of the same family, committing through time and financial investment, forming close community bonds.

Phil Hill is a photographic artist whose practice is concerned with narrative interpretation, connection, and identity. Phil has worked extensively with a range of clients internationally and now dedicates his time to producing long form projects and teaching. Phil was born in Frome, Somerset and continues to make some of his work there, interested in his own experiences of family, narrative and being from a working-class background.
