Photowalks with David Chedgy

Three Urban and Street Photography Walks

Led by lifelong Frome photographer – and Photo|Frome co-founder – David Chedgy, who knows the town inside and out.

Unleash your creativity in a relaxed, fun and friendly group environment. Each walk takes approximately two hours and is suitable for all abilities and usually finishes at a cafe with a chat and refreshments.

Photowalk – ‘The Hungry Eye’

FOR STUDENT & ADULTS – BRING A CAMERA OR SMARTPHONE

A four-and-a-half-hour photowalk around Frome on techniques to further develop your unique visual viewpoint, with photographer Richard Morrison.

About Richard: I work in many genres, though am well known for street photography. When I walk out into the street there are three things I look for: light, composition and subject. I am always seeking out the striking single image, and like capturing the everyday life of people in their natural environments, often with ambiguity and humour in the scene. I’ve exhibited at Chelsea Arts club and in Soho galleries. My street photography book Seen London is featured in Tate Gallery bookshops and the Photographers’ Gallery. As a visual artist, I also work in the movie and tv business, creating opening title sequences. The eye is always hungry!

Comfortable footwear essential. Just bring one camera, one lens or a smartphone. Travel light. This walk is for a group of 8–12 only.

The bandstand is a sheltered meeting point for the opening introduction. The park has a café for hot drinks, and toilets. There will be a break for hot drinks & sandwich, and a closing half hour for a more detailed question and answer session at the Cheese and Grain in Market Yard, finishing 1.30pm. Tickets available in January.

Along the walk we will cover the essentials of looking and seeing a scene, incorporating these headings:

  • AESTHETIC or light/shade
  • SUBJECT or colour/composition
  • MOMENT being people/drama
  • POINT OF VIEW high and low angles
  • ALCHEMY = MAGIC (rare moments)

‘My World’ Photo Studio & Workshop

FOR  CHILDREN BETWEEN 10–13 YEARS, ACCOMPANIED BY ADULT

Create a photograph that says something about your life and world in a photo studio setup with professional photographer Joss Barratt on hand with top tips and his camera.

Bring along one or two items that really matter to you, or express something about your life, to be the subject of your personal photo. It could be a skateboard, your favourite trainers, a pet, a favourite toy, a violin – totally up to you. 

You can be in the picture, or not. There will be a light box on site, some props. You will take away a top quality photographic print. We’ll ask you to tell us what your object or item means to you, in a sentence or two. You will take the photograph. Joss might take one too.

It should be fun and fast. We will ask you or a parent to sign a consent form, to allow PhotoFrome to use your photograph for a future exhibition.

Traditional Cyanotype Workshop

FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN BETWEEN 5–13 YEARS

Anjalika Baier has been practising camera-less photography, including cyanotype or sun print, for the past four years. It is a relatively simple and fun process after which all participants can take home a print of their own making.

This could be an Easter inspired greeting card or an image of flowers and leaves. The cyanotype-covered paper and some plant material will be provided, however everyone is encouraged to bring along some of their own botanicals.

The process is very much relying on strong UV light, so on a rainy day it can take up to 30 minutes to develop the image.

‘Before You Press That Button’

FOR STUDENTS & ADULTS – BRING YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA OR SMARTPHONE

A morning spent with professional photographer Mark Somerville who will guide you through the basics of photographic composition.

Photography. These days, it’s easy, right? You just press a button, and the camera does the rest. If not, you can always fix a dodgy picture in Photoshop. Well, up to a point…

But, NO!

Hang on a minute.

Like with everything else, there are some basic rules and conventions to learn when you first pick up your camera.They are all relatively easy to understand and will make a huge difference to your photography. Mark will spend the morning talking through some of these and give you the opportunity to put them into practice with a short outdoor photoshoot followed by a group discussion.

Only when you know the rules, can you break them…

Astrophotography with Smartphone and Mirrorless Camera

FOR STUDENTS & ADULTS

Roger Hyman has been interested in photography for 50 years after being a keen astronomer in his teens. When he took early retirement, he combined his two interests and has managed to photograph the sun, the moon, the planets of the solar system, the stars and the other wonders of the Universe.

Roger will be demonstrating how to get some simple images with a smartphone, going on to using a mirrorless camera on a tripod to achieve stunning astro landscapes. He will also show how to get the Milky Way with a landscape. 

Prints will be on display as well as the actual equipment used to achieve the presentation images. There will also be a Q&A at the end of the talk.
